First Saturdays on Burial Hill
Free Themed History Tours of Plymouth’s Ancient Burying Ground
Join us every first Saturday of the month through 2012 (excepting January) at 1 pm for an engaging series of free history tours of Burial Hill, led by local historians. Meet at the main entrance by First Parish Church. No reservations required for individuals and families. Involves strenuous walking on steep hillside. Saturday, February 4th — 1 pm: Women's History on the Hill
Learn about women’s changing roles and experiences over the centuries and encounter some of Plymouth’s most intriguing women of past eras in this one-hour guided tour with Dr. Donna Curtin, Executive Director, Plymouth Antiquarian Society, and author of Plymouth, a postcard history. Saturday, March 3rd — 1 pm: The 17th Century Origins of Burial Hill
Stephen O’Neill, Associate Director of Pilgrim Hall Museum, shares his expertise on Plymouth history to examine the colony’s funerary practices and the development of its early burying ground. Pot Luck Supper
Tuesday, April 3rd — 5:30 pm
Kendall Hall, First Parish Church, Town Square, Plymouth
Enjoy a taste of history at our annual pot luck supper. Distinguished scholar Thomas Turner presents an illustrated lecture on Abraham Lincoln’s New England connections. Dr. Turner will explore Lincoln's ancestors who settled in Hingham in the 1600’s, his 1848 visit to Massachusetts to campaign for Zachary Taylor, and his involvement with the Forefather’s Monument in Plymouth.
Social hour begins at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6 pm and lecture at 7 pm.

Saturday, April 7th — 1 pm: Finding Early Plymouth: A View from Burial Hill
Many visitors appreciate the scenic vistas observed from Burial Hill’s steep slopes. Dr. Karin Goldstein of Plimoth Plantation offers an intriguing historical overview of early Plymouth from this exceptional vantage point. Meet at the main entrance by First Parish Church. 1812 Remembered! Backroads of the South Shore History Symposium
Saturday, April 14th — 10 am - 2:30 pm
Allerton Hall, Church of the Pilgrimage, 8 Town Square, Plymouth
Local historians present a series of mini-lectures investigating the War of 1812 on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. Rediscover the stirring narratives of this largely forgotten war and learn about its impact on local communities. Sponsored by the Backroads of the South Shore, a local consortium of small historical societies and museums that includes the Plymouth Antiquarian Society.

Saturday, May 5th — 1 pm: Portrait Stones of Burial Hill
Examine Burial Hill’s superlative collection of rare 18th and early 19th century portrait stones. These unusual grave markers feature carved images of graciously attired people not unlike painted portraiture, right down to tiny details of dress, hairstyle, and posture. Learn about this special genre of gravestone art on a one-hour walking tour with Dr. Donna Curtin. Meet at the main entrance by First Parish Church. Jane Austen Tea at the Hedge House Museum
Saturday, May 12th — 2 to 4 pm, Mother’s Day weekend
Enjoy a scrumptious English tea and immerse yourself in Jane Austen’s world during a special tour of the 1809 Hedge House. Experience the customs and social milieu of Regency England as described in Austen's novels; elegantly costumed guides provide insights on the experiences of provincial Americans in the era.

Saturday, May 19th — 10 am to 2 pm
Join the spinners and crafters of the Harlow House Fiber Guild for a day of learning about natural dyes. Several dye pots will be simmering with natural materials such as henna, safflower, madder root, and the indigo plant, which transforms from a green-yellow color in the pot to a brilliant blue when exposed to air. Special activities for children include dyeing with Jello or creating a felted ornament to take home. The event will be held rain or shine. Free and open to the public. Help preserve local history while you enjoy an afternoon on an award-winning scenic New England course. Fee of $125 (early registration) per player includes all golf fees, dinner, and a contribution to the Antiquarian Society. Historic House Tours at the Hedge House Museum, 126 Water Street
June through August
Visit the authentically restored 1809 Hedge House on the Plymouth waterfront. This gracious Federal mansion with unusual octagonal rooms was lived in by local merchants and entrepreneurs in the early years of the new nation.
Open Wednesday-Sunday, 2 to 6 pm, June through August.

Historic House Tours at the Spooner House Museum, 27 North Street
June through August
Five generations of family heirlooms are on display in the cozy Spooner House, occupied by one Plymouth family for over 200 years. Features authentic furnishings from the colonial era to the 20th century, and an enclosed “secret garden.”
Open Thursday-Saturday, 2 to 6 pm, June through August.
Admission: $5 adults; $2 children; free for PAS members and Plymouth residents.
Thursdays at the Harlow Old Fort House, 119 Sandwich Street
June through August
Visit this rare surviving 17th century homestead, original home of William Harlow, local cooper, farmer, constable and sergeant of the Plymouth militia, every Thursday afternoon throughout the summer. Bring the kids for a hands-on crafts program at the on-site Education Center. Gift shop open.
Hours: Thursdays, 2 to 6 pm, June through August.

Generations of Plymoutheans earned a living from the sea. Harlow Old Fort House, 119 Sandwich Street
Sunday, July 8th — 8:30 to 11:30 am
Costumed servers dish out piping hot fishcakes, baked beans, cornbread and other tasty fare, while strolling singers share songs, riddles, and 17th century cheer. This hearty New England breakfast is a local tradition not to be missed! Proceeds benefit the preservation of the 1677 Harlow House.
